GOAL:Increase self-advocacy.

ACTIVITIES:Daniel can practice how to ask for what he wants (to sell a candy bar) and how to handle rejection appropriately. He may be selling with a group of children (outside a grocery store for example), and he can practice how to handle any conflicts or bullying that may occur, first by speaking up and then by asking an adult for help if necessary.

Notice how this one project incorporated all the areas of skills that we discussed at the beginning of this mindset? Almost any task can be used to practice multiple skills. Educators and other professionals can turn any project into a rich learning experience. The skill building can be spread out among various adults helping the child. With everyone on board, the child is more likely to get excited about the project, to have more opportunities to repeatedly practice skills, and to generalize and maintain them.
